Influence begins before you speak. Long before someone evaluates your words, they are responding to your composure, identity, attention, confidence, and ability to understand them.
In this episode of Speaking With Authority, Jim Koetting sits down with Merlin OBrecht, a behavioral scientist, educator, and Dean of Academic Affairs at NCI University. Merlin studies the subtle patterns in human behavior that reveal identity, intention, pressure, authority, and influence. His work with Chase Hughes and NCI University is built around a critical progression: self-mastery, observation, and communication, in that order.
What makes someone feel safe enough to follow a leader? Why do rehearsed communication techniques disappear under pressure? How does identity shape lasting behavior change? What happens when a leader possesses positional authority but lacks authority over himself? Jim and Merlin examine these questions while exploring cognitive dissonance, emotional regulation, behavioral profiling, personal confidence, curiosity, and ethical influence.
They also discuss why leaders cannot use the same approach with everyone. One person may need approval, while another needs autonomy or challenge. Effective leadership requires understanding how people are “tuned” before deciding how to communicate with them.
Jim develops that idea through the central metaphor behind his forthcoming book and keynote, Influence Starts in the Brain: every leader drifts out of tune, and everyone around them can hear it. Before leaders attempt to influence a team, change a culture, or command a room, they must learn to tune themselves first.
This conversation is for leaders, executives, entrepreneurs, coaches, speakers, and sales professionals who want to understand the psychology of influence without reducing it to scripts, shortcuts, or manipulation.
