Why does progress so rarely die in a crisis and so often die on cruise control? Hall of Fame speaker and former NBA player Walter Bond calls the culprit "comfort creep," and in this episode of Speaking With Authority he explains how it quietly stalls successful leaders, teams, and companies, and what to do about it.
Walter went undrafted out of the University of Minnesota, broke his foot twice in one year, and still made the Dallas Mavericks' opening-night lineup, scoring 25 points in his second NBA game. He also tells the part of the story most speakers leave out: once he reached the NBA, he stopped recalibrating. Three seasons later, Jerry Sloan called him over at practice and said, "We're going in a different direction." That lesson became the foundation of his work with Fortune 500 companies for the last 25 years.
Host Jim Koetting and Walter cover the difference between success and significance, why great players often become poor managers, the Boss to Coach model of leadership, Walter's three-part framework for making progress (Target, Playbook, Roster), and what it takes to hold a room of 3,000 people who didn't choose to be there.
KEY QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS EPISODE
What is comfort creep?
Comfort creep is the gradual loss of edge that follows success. A person or organization reaches a target, celebrates it, and keeps celebrating it for years instead of setting a new one. Walter's remedy is to recalibrate: every time you hit a target, set the next one.
What is the difference between a boss and a coach?
A boss manages tasks and protects their own performance. A coach builds confidence, develops people, and helps them reach their potential. Most managers are promoted for being good individual contributors and are never taught the difference.
What does it take to make real progress?
Walter's framework has three parts: a clear, specific Target everyone in the organization knows; a Playbook that defines how the work gets done; and the right Roster of people who push each other to improve.
What is the difference between success and significance?
Success is about you. Significance begins when you use what you have achieved to help someone else reach their target.
